Motion Photography Presentation
Wednesday, April 9, 1:00pm
Barnstable Senior Center
Photographing motion requires an entirely different skillset (and mindset!) from photographing landscapes, still lifes, or portraits! In this hourlong presentation we’ll look at various equipment, techniques, and psychology needed to photograph motion as a subject. -
Experimental Photography
Wednesday, May 7, 7:00pm
Duxbury Camera Club
Beyond the landscape and portrait, photography can be an improvisational endeavor. By freeing up our preconceptions of what a photograph “should” be, we can be open to (as Minor White noted) “what else it could be.” We’ll examine multiple exposure, ICM, and post-processing on both the computer and cell phone to see how we can open our eyes and our minds to new possibilities. -
From Atget to AI: The History of Photography
Saturday, May 10, 1:00pm
Osterville LibraryApproaching the 200th anniversary of the first recorded photograph, we look back on how the intersection of physics, chemistry, mechanics, and art have led us to a time when no image can be considered “true.” From Leonardo’s camera obscura to Niépce 1827 heliograph to Atget’s Paris to Ansel’s Yosemite to Photoshop’s AI, changes in technology have driven artistic vision, even as artistic vision has pushed the boundaries of the era’s technology. In this presentation we’ll take a whirlwind tour of over 200 years of image creation to see how photography has changed the world, and how the world has changed photography.

In Person
Tuesday, May 27, 7:00pm
Online
Cape Cod Art Center
Photographing sports requires an entirely different skillset (and mindset!) from photographing landscapes, still lifes, or portraits! On the first Tuesday night we’ll explore an overview of equipment, techniques, and psychology needed to photograph fast moving action. For those registered for both, we’ll put our learning into action during the Figawi race on Saturday (see next entry). The following Tuesday night we’ll have the opportunity to review and discuss your images online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. -
Figawi Cruise
Saturday, May 24, 8:00am-12:00pm
On the Art Center boat!
Join the Cape Cod Art Center or a private boat outing in Hyannis Harbor to watch the start of the annual Figawi Race from Hyannis to Nantucket. The parade of sailboats is a glorious sight to see (and photograph)! I’ll be leading a 2-session photography workshop pre and post Figawi Race for photographers of all levels (workshop info to the left). I’ll be onboard to lend my knowledge of live action sport photography during the cruise. The smooth riding 64′ motor catamaran Bay Spirit provides a wonderful vantage point for photographing the Figawi racers and the beautiful scenery surrounding Hyannis Harbor. -

Classes, Workshops, Talks, and Mentoring
Basics of the Big Black Camera
Learn about all those buttons, knobs, and dials on your DSLR or Mirrorless Camera. What do they do, how do they affect your image? You’ll learn about Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO, and when you should be concerned with each.
Street Photography
Hit the streets (or beaches) without fear to document your unique world. An endlessly fascinating genre of photography, Street Photography can be practiced anywhere people are in public and can hone not only your photographic skills but your emotional skills as well. Whether in Provincetown or Providence there are street and beach scenes that will enrich your portfolio.
Landscape Photography
Cape Cod provides unique landscapes, but the same basics apply. Correct camera settings, good light, interesting subjects, and dynamic compositions are all necessary for wall-worthy prints. Whether in color or black-and-white, your inner Ansel Adams will find expression in these workshops.
Still Life Photography
What to shoot when winter comes? Gray cold dreary days offer the perfect opportunity to photograph created scenes of flowers, food, and other items that you may have around the house. Through our camera settings, control of lighting, and post-processing techniques we can bring out the inner renaissance artist that lives within each of us!
Artificial Intelligence in Photos
It’s a Brave New World with AI producing images that can be difficult to tell apart from the real thing! Rather than despair, we can learn to harness the power of AI to augment our photography in ethical ways. Whether tweaking our own images with AI, or using AI images as a point of departure, digital artists have some new and amazing tools at their disposal.
Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop may be the most powerful digital imaging tool outside of NASA’s Web Telescope. From images to text to page layout to printing, Photoshop can do almost anything. The most used tools are covered in depth, with practice assignments between sessions. Learning Photoshop is a lifetime journey that will allow you complete control over your images.
Cellphoneography
The old adage “the best camera is the one you have with you” is more true today than ever. To this we’ll add “the best darkroom is the one you have with you” and look at the native cellphone camera controls and various apps that allow much greater creative freedom.
Portrait Photography
Every face and every person is a unique photographic subject, and capturing the essence of a person in the camera is a challenge to both our photographic and human skills. Looking at camera settings, lighting patterns, posing and conversations to bring out the best in your subject, we cover available light as well as strobes, reflectors, and DIY lighting.
Sports Photography
College baseball, high school football, the kid’s soccer games, all provide exciting and dynamic subjects for your photography. Challenges include camera settings, ISO, freezing action (or blurring action), and anticipating where the action will unfold will all be covered in these sessions.
Contemplative Photography
Photography can be a meditative process, and by bringing an intentional mindfulness to everyday subjects we can explore the inner life of those subjects and of ourselves. Combining mindfulness practices with exercises in seeing, we come to know ourselves better while finding interest in even the most mundane subjects.
Lightroom
Adobe Lightroom is the industry standard for managing photographic collections and for post-processing those images. Learn the differences and similarities between the Classic, Desktop, Web, and Mobile versions of Lightroom, and begin to corral and improve those images scattered on your hard drives and phone.
