“Where the f*** are we?” A common curse among weekend sailors heading through Nantucket Sound. From this refrain came the Memorial Day weekend race from Hyannis to Nantucket, this year’s version being the 52nd. I had the good fortune to again this year be the resident photography resource for the Cape Cod Art Center’s Figawi cruise at the start of the race, following a Sports Photography class I taught at the Center. Unlike last year’s cruise, we did not have beautiful clear skies with puffy white clouds… this year was cloudy and gray, lending a different vibe for photography. While I captured many images with the Big Black Camera, my favorites were the 3-5 second exposures on the iPhone. As with most panning shots, only about 1 in 20 produced a reasonable result, but with a bit of post processing a more magical and painterly effect was produced. Very different, and much quieter, than the action from last year’s sports images!
